Jennifer wrote for the Los Angeles Jewish Journal…
“Rabbi Reuben Modek… said we would “meet” through Skype, a software application that allows users to make voice (and video) calls over the Internet… A schedule was put into place that suited the time difference between New York and California. My son, an early riser whose school doesn’t begin until 8:45 am now receives his one-hour, weekly bar mitzvah lesson at 7 a.m. on Mondays… I listen to the hour sessions from another room so I can’t be seen on the webcam. This week, the rabbi and my son talked about what the Torah is… These days seem like the beginning of a personal transformation, not just for my son as he becomes a man but for me too. How we got to this moment is far from usual and where it all ends up isn’t clear, except for the part where a veteran event planner (grandma Sandra in New York) puts together an amazing bar mitzvah.”
